Australian Jamboree 2019
Around 12,000 people will create South Australia’s 4th largest township just outside Tailem Bend when they converge on the area for the 25th National Scout Jamboree (AJ19) between 3 and 14 January 2019. Add a further 8,000 visitors (Cubs, leaders and parents) from 12 January and the site will accommodate a population slightly smaller than that of Whyalla*.
Comprising Scouts (age 11-14), Cubs (age 8-10) leaders (and some parents of younger participants), mostly from Australia but with contingents from as far as the USA and UK, this will most certainly be Australia’s most active and vibrant town for the duration of its existence.
AJ2019 will afford participants the chance to make friends for life and participate in a host of exciting activities most ‘mere mortals’ would not have the chance to experience across this incredible 12 day period. In addition to a full schedule of activities to be held on site at The Bend Motorsport Park, AJ2019 participants will also engage in activities at the Woodhouse Scout Activity Centre at Piccadilly, the Murraylands/Coorong for water activities, Adelaide city and the Port Adelaide historical precinct.
The infrastructure necessary to facilitate this mammoth project is a daunting task with all facilities required to house such a large number of people for 12 days having to be established. The list is almost endless including utilities - power, water, gas, sewerage plus accommodation zones, food prep, storage and service facilities, medical facilities (be prepared!), an entertainment precinct, and full communications facilities including a daily newspaper, a radio station, TV station, media centre and high speed internet facilities.
Logistics include not only arrival and departure of 20,000 people but also transport to move around 4000 participants to off-site activity areas each day. And that’s before the activities are brought in!
It’s not too late to embrace the experience!
